I took up running a few years ago in order to lose weight, going from a 15-stone cheese-worrier to a 12-stone slip-of-a-lad in the process. Now I run for pleasure. Not the pleasure of running itself you understand – that would be ridiculous – but for that feeling of satisfaction and achievement you get afterwards. My ambiguous and somewhat open-ended aim of ‘getting better’ took a knock in 2014 when I was diagnosed with cancer. Happily now in remission, I’m getting back on track, albeit a way off where I was. I don’t, however, take running, myself or anything else too seriously. Life’s too short.
